A few days ago I saw this really fun idea shared on Facebook. It was a picture of green grass covered with lollipops. The post said to “plant” jelly beans with your kids the night before Easter and after they go to sleep replace them with suckers for a morning surprise (I can’t find the original source. If you know where credit belongs, please let me know so I can link back to them!) Anyways, what a fun idea! I wanted to do it with my kids (even if the highschooler might not think it was all that fun) but wanted a fun way to present it. I didn’t want to just hand them a bag of jelly beans and say go to it. Handing them baggies of magic seeds seemed like it might add to the fun so I created these printables to go with the activity. Fun, right?!
I created two versions of the printable bag toppers, an Easter version and a generic one. That way you can totally use it for an Easter activity, but can also save it for any other day that needs a little extra happy in it. Maybe a birthday, or just something fun in the midst of chaos. Heaven knows we have enough chaos in the midst of this corona virus pandemic. We can all use a little pick me up right about now. Don’t you think? A printable that can be used anytime just seems fitthing.
When I started thinking about how I was going to put this all together, I realized that I don’t have green grass at the moment. I have grass, but it’s definitely not green and even if it was we’d have to be careful because our dog, Lucy, would have a hay day with a lawn full of suckers. I realized, that there are plenty of other people out there with similar predicaments or who might live in an apartment and need another alternative. What about pots? Yes!!! A cute flower pot, little bucket, even a cute mug or a re-purposed soup can tied with a ribbon or twine would totally work! Wouldn’t this be a cute neighbor gift? You could drop a cute flower pot with a bag of magic seeds on someone’s front porch (maybe leave the suckers in a paper bag that reads to: and the mom and dad’s name or something with a quick note with directions). So many options…. Shall we get to the details?
Materials
-Printables, click here to download
–Scissors, or paper trimmer
-Baggies (snack or sandwich sized)
–Jelly Beans
-Grass, or potting container
-Clean soil
-Cardboard (if you need help getting lollipops to stand up in a container)
–Lollipops
Directions
–Download, print, and trim Bag Toppers.
-Staple or tape to baggie (snack or sandwich sized) filled with jelly beans.
-Give it to the kid(s). Have them plant the magic seeds. To make things super simple, have them scatter the seeds over the lawn. You can also give them a little bucket, flower pot, or even an upcycled soup can tied with a bow to plant in.
-If you choose the pot option, you may need to trace and cut two pieces of cardboard to use to help the lollipops stand up. Trace and cut them to fit inside the pot. Holding them together, use a bamboo skewer or the pointed tip of scissors to poke holes through both pieces of cardboard. You will want the holes to line up. If you use scissors, it might be best to put holes in one piece, then use a pen to mark the holes on the second piece, using the first as a template, and to poke holes in the second piece.
-Place lollipops in the lawn or in the container you planted your seeds in.
-Wait for the kids to wake up and watch their faces light up when they discover what surprise sprouted.
I think that’s about it. But if you have any questions or I left something out let me know and I’ll get back to you ASAP.

LOVE THIS IDEA?
